As of January 1, 2010 there were 5.63 million head of sheep in the United States. That’s down from a peak of 56 million in the 1940s. Yet, sheep herding is growing in popularity as a sport. And “It gets more popular every year,” said Francis Raley, secretary of the United States Border Collie Handler’s Association. On any given weekend sheepdog trials are held throughout North America. Furthermore, pleasure farmers and hobby ranchers are learning the value of a having a good sheepdog dog to help them manage their sheep at home.
